About Feathered Friends
Feathered Friends Forever Rescue/Refuge, Inc. is a State-of-Georgia licensed animal shelter and 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization located in Harlem, Georgia. Feathered Friends works diligently to improve the lives of companion birds by providing them with an intermittent or permanent safe haven as it endeavors to further advance avian welfare through public education and awareness efforts.
Hours of operation:
Saturday and Sunday: 11am to 5pm
Other times are available by appointment.
TIPS FOR VISITORS:
- Our park features outdoor aviaries set in a natural environment. For safety's sake, please refrain from wearing open-toed shoes or sandals during your visit. Ants may be present as well as sticks and stones.
- We are constantly expanding and improving our facility so be aware of any ongoing construction.
- Please don't allow children to run on the grounds or to throw things as this upsets the birds. Keep them close, you never know when or where that perfect photo opportunity might present itself!
- If you wish to bring a group, kindly let us know in advance so that we can ensure everyone has a good, safe time.
The Georgia Dept. of Agriculture stopped by Feathered Friends today to do an inspection. They were very impressed with how clean the facility was, how happy and healthy ALL the birds were, and how all 1384 birds on site were accounted for. Matter of fact, they like our forms for Incoming and Outgoing Birds that they took copies and this will likely become the state standard form. They thought that our computer spreadsheet was a great idea too! Apparently we will become the unofficial "standard" by which all other rescues are compared to. That's quite an honor and we will continue to improve everything we can.
So, we start 2013 with our GA Animal Shelter License renewed with a 100% rating. This is our 15th year in operation and our 9th at the current Harlem GA location.
We've also been visited, inspected and APPROVED by the local animal control agency, the local Sheriff's department, and - believe it or not - even the FBI stopped by for a visit and gave us their blessing. They all left impressed, made some new feathered friends while they were here and some of them even gave us a donation! We will probably see them again at our upcoming Open House happening June 1st and 2nd, 2013
We are now contacting the ASPCA, national and regional Humane Society, and even PETA to inviting them to come see our new habitats and how well the birds are living there. All these visits are helping bring awareness about abandoned parrots and the efforts of rescues like ours to provide shelter and look for new homes for them. If our technology and designs can help parrots in other rescues live better, that is something else we can be proud of.
The volunteers are enlarging the parking area because we are now expecting a visit from Homeland Security. They drive those really big gas guzzling vehicles and we want them to be able to turn around easily. If they show up, BooBoo has volunteered to take pictures with them, as long as she gets to stand on one of their big guns!
New Flight Opens!
October 7 2012
Another state-of-the-art flight -to house all cockatoos- opens at the Rescue this month. Our goal this year was to have 4 new flights completed by fall, and we did it!!!
The new flights feature automatic misters, infrared heating and a new pond design that provides both bathing and drinking water supplied by a 13,500 gallon, eco-friendly pond. We have added all new perches and swings along with tons of wood to let them do what birds love to do most, climbing and chewing.
For those of you who haven't visited in a while, come on out and see the new out-back area! It's part of the new $250,000.00 renovation project we're going to be working on over next 3 years. Our goal: to create and provide, to the best of our ability, natural settings where our birds can just be birds and where increased well-being transforms pluckers and mutilators into the healthy, beautiful, fully-feathered creatures Nature intended them to be.
